Dear Miller Family, Our last big school-wide community service project started on Monday. It's the "Green Bag Project". This is when we collect non-perishable food items, put them in green bags (delivered to you), and then we distribute them to families in Central Oregon through our good friends and partners at The Bend Food Project and The Giving Plate. Students are given green bags to bring home, fill with food, and return to school.  Students have until Wednesday, May 13, to return the bags of food. On May 13, we will weigh the food, and our partners will pick up the food. Thanks for all of your amazing help and support. Our Miller Family is awesome!

Everybody Brush Dental Screening: Advantage Dental will be returning to our school on May 19 (in the morning) to provide on-site dental screenings for students. This is a convenient way to have your child’s teeth checked by a dental professional during the school day.

Accidents Happen:  Sometimes we have students who need a clean pair of pants, etc. at school.  Currently, we need some boys sweat pants - all sizes.  These can be new or gently worn.  Items can be dropped off at the front desk.  Thank you!

Book Swap Party! It’s almost time for the big day…our Book Swap Party. Please have your kiddos bring in 1-5 gently used books they are ready to part with. Please start bringing books now. Books that would be found in our library. If they turn in books, they get that many books back of their choosing. They get to “purchase” their books with “book bucks”; it’s kind of a big deal! And this year I am adding a parent book swap! Same idea, drop off 1-5 books and you can choose up to that many to bring home. You get book bucks too!!

This is my favorite way to kick-off summer reading! If you can’t make it Thursday, come by school anytime Friday from 7:30-10:00am. But bring your books asap.

Join us for Miller Elementary Art Night, a special evening celebrating your child’s creativity and the artwork they’ve created this year with our Artist in Residence. Walk the halls to enjoy a gallery of student work from all grade levels, and explore hands-on STEAM activities and exhibits hosted by the Central Oregon Children’s Museum.

We’re looking for a few volunteers to help with Art Night set-up, greeting families, activities, and clean-up. It’s an easy way to support our young artists and be part of a fun night! Sign up here

April 7, 2026

Spring is here, and things are heating up for both learning and extracurricular activities for students at Miller! This News From the Den is packed full of important dates and information. 

OSAS Testing for Grades 3-5

All students in grades 3-5 will participate in the Oregon Statewide Assessments for English Language Arts, Math, and Science (Grade 5 only) beginning May 4th. If you would like to opt your student out of testing, please fill out the attached form and send it to your student’s teacher or Ms. Scott.

Lockdown Drill Notice

As part of our Safety Response Protocols, we will conduct a Lockdown Drill on April 10. During the drill, all exterior doors to Miller will be locked, and visitors will not be allowed to enter the school between 1:15 and 1:30. Students will also not be able to leave during this time. If you need to pick up or drop off your student during this time, please plan accordingly.

Wheels Unit in PE

Ms. Monet will be leading students through skateboarding and strider bikes April 20-May 1! Bring your helmet to PE during those dates and “Let’s Roll!”

OBOB State Championship: Our very own Reading Rockets Chapter 3 are heading to the OBOB State Championship this Saturday, April 11, in Salem. If you and your kiddos are interested in heading over to watch and experience what the championship looks like, please reach out and I can give you more details. Once again, huge congrats to these girls. They have literally been “training” for three years for this. They are so deserving! Good luck to Mae Curran, Tegan Burke, Neve Fonaciari-Olsen, and Lily Kopecky. Cheeto-bear and I will be there too!!

Ms. Home’s Next Adventure: You may have heard that my family and I are relocating overseas to Vietnam. Yes, it is indeed true. The word has been slowly getting around so I just wanted you to hear it from me as well. My sister-in-law has been living there and running a few businesses and it’s time for us to join her. We have been traveling there over the past 20 years and we all love it. Our kids are finally ready and it’s time to reinvent our lives. We will be living very south on the beach in paradise (Mui Ne). We will be doing so many different things, but one thing that I will be doing is tutoring kids and adults that are learning English. I also plan to start setting up little libraries around town. And…I will start writing a children’s book series about our very own library fairies, Paige and Pip. Maybe I will be an author visiting Miller someday??! I am going to miss you all so much. My time at Miller with all of you has been the joy of my life!

Our Annual Invention Convention!

Teachers have already shared how to enter. We ask our students to invent something that will fix a problem they see in the world. It can be quite simple or very complex. The ideas and work should be done by the students. An adult can help if the prototype requires using a potentially dangerous tool.

• Students can work alone or in a group of up to 3
• Students fill out an Invention Planning sheet
• At home, make a poster and a prototype of the invention
• The prototype does not need to actually work
• The Poster and Invention Prototype are due on Friday, Feb. 27th
• We line the hallways with the inventions
• Last year we had 165 inventions!
• Staff and Students get a chance to view the inventions
• We will have an Invention Convention Family Night March 3rd 5 - 6:30 pm
• Members of the Rotary Club of Greater Bend will visit Miller and select the top inventions.
• Winners and their families will be invited to a luncheon where the students get to show off their work

Flu Information:  Please see a doctor immediately and if your child is diagnosed within the first 48 hours, they are recommending antiviral medication, Tamiflu, used to prevent and treat influenza.  It decreases the severity, and duration of symptoms of influenza.

Medication: Parents, if your student needs ‘as needed’ medicine, ie, Tylenol, Motrin, etc, you must bring it in the original, unopened box and fill out an Authorization for Medication form.

Reminders

Picking up your child early?  We appreciate an email to the teacher and Attendance email - miller-attendance@bend.k12.or.us, but also request you call the school when you are on the way for pick up.  This way we can call the student up and not keep you waiting for your child.  Thank you!

Please label students' coats, sweatshirts, etc with the student's first and last name.  Many items are left outside during recess.  

Student Water Bottles:  Please, no glass water bottles.

Central Oregon Educator Job Fair – April 14, 2026

The High Desert Education Service District is hosting the Central Oregon Educator Job Fair on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, from 2:00–5:30 p.m. at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center (Middle Sister Building) in Redmond.

This free event connects educators and school staff with district leaders from across Central Oregon. Attendees can learn about current openings, meet hiring teams, and may even participate in pre-screening or full interviews on-site. Positions include math and special education teachers, counselors, speech language pathologists, dual immersion/bilingual educators, and more.

There is no cost to attend, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at hdesd.org so their resumes can be shared with hiring districts prior to the event.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Friday Night’s Bingo — you helped make it such a fun and memorable evening!

Following Mr. Craft’s email shared over the weekend about our registrar, Andrea Groves, the Miller PTO would also like to surround Andrea and her family with support as she continues her recovery.
